As to the Semsi Ahmet Pasha (his name comes from the word "sams" or the
sun which replaces the moon on the alem of the mosque by way of allusion).
He had plotted against Sokollu Mehmet Pasha who was the Grand Admiral and
then the Grand Vezir for some months before his assasination. Semsi Pasha had
to wait for some time before Murat II gave him the seal of the Grand Vezir.
The appointment was noteworthy for he was the first sadrazam since the 15th
century who was of noble, indeed royal Ottoman descent and not the child of
a devsirme. He was the head of the Isfendiyaroglu family and a descendant
of the Candarli house which had been stripped of its immense powers by
Beyazit II and Selim the Grim. He was not to hold the office for long and
he commissioned Mimar Sinan to build him a mosque in 1580, there was little
time to spare. The little complex considered among the smallest erected by a
Chancellor,is set against the water along the point of Usküdar. Its garden
is open towards the sea from which it is cut off by a wall with grilled
windows and a modest gate. It is clear that this was meant to be the
approach because the back of the madrassa cells on this side are faced in
stone and not in mixed courses. The complex consists of a small square
mosque, an L shaped madrassa, a dershane (lecture room), and the türbe or tomb of the pasha. This complex is the forerunner of the small sadrazam complexes of
the next century which were built along the Divan Yolu in particular.
