I visited Egypt first in 1997.In November 2000 I was in Egypt for the second time, and I intend to come again. First, I was in Luxor for a vacation, then in Cairo on business. The hospitality of the Egyptians is heartwarming. I have many friends there now.

Dear Mr, Rafaat, I think you are, accumilativly, creating, an encyclopedia for the history of Egypt during the last 150 years. What I really appreciate is that you could be considered as an honest source of information not affected by political or any external forces which usually ends up with distorted and false information, as we are used to experience in the middle east. Your pages are rich with very interesting data and cover-obscured subjects. I really appreciate your work. Thank you for every thing. What a brilliant web site. I am so pleased there's one on the net. I've been to Egypt 5 times back in 1989 to 1991, a long time since, I know. Each time I visited I had a brilliant time, which was either alone or with my dad. He's going to be really pleased about this web page as well, when I tell him. Egypt is such a beautiful place to visit and there's so much to see and do. I wish I was out there now just like my dad (Bill) does also. He's hoping to visit again in Nov 2001 for a few months break. My last visit was back in 1991 because I met my wife and we started a family, (now with three kids) so we'll have to wait another 10yrs before I can take her there. Such is life 'a'! Well once again, what an excellent web site and many thanks to all the Egyptians who made my time out there so happy and memorable. Regards Kevin.

Mr. Raafat. Thank you for reviving the memories of a beautiful Garden City, where I lived for four years in the early sixties. I went to school at CAC in Maadi, when CAC was at Prince Ibrahims villa. Lovely place, I'm very sorry it has fallen apart. One could not imagine that such beautiful gardens and landmark could be left to die away. I remember two Spanish brother and sister: Emilio and Mercedes. I am Spanish origin married to a Lebanese and I would like so much to know if they are still in Maadi. I have great memories of Egypt as a whole and I have been back on several occasions but I found Cairo changed a lot. I do hope that the preservation team you founded can be helpful. In Switzerland, landmarks over 70 years are protected and restored rather than demolished and the people have a say collecting signatures, presenting these motions to the Government in order to preserve the sites. Of course I would be glad to see a new article every day as I visit EGY.COM often but I realize this is not possible. Nevertheless, as I used to go to Agami and Ismailia on summer holidays I would be grateful if you could place some articles on what happened. Ismailia in the 60s was a lovely little village. We used to attend the sailing Club and it was lovely.
My father worked at the UNEF at Sharia al Nabatat in Cairo and our last address was Maamal al Sukar. I wish you all the best for your site and as I attended the Franciscans - Rue Antikhana, in Cairo where I had many friends. Specially Evely and Mireille Dayan. Does anybody know where they are? Thanks again for all the efforts you do to keep this spirit of people having nostalgia of Egypt, in general. María González de Kheir

My last trip to Cairo in late April this year, I had per chance to visit the area behind the Central Bank on Kasr el Nil Street. I was greatly impressed with the very recent renovation of the area. It has brought the area and buildings surrounding the Stock Exchange and Cosmopolitan Hotel to its former 30's/40's glory. One would hope that this effort will be continued in the rest of the surrounding area. Surprisingly few people that I knew either had made the effort or took the time to see it. An article on the history of the area, who took this initiative and future plans for the area would be greatly appreciated. My greatest compliments to whoever took this initiative - it shows that there are still some people who care. On a further note I walked about Abdin, especially the residential area close to the Palace, and found the area, although run-down, still of beauty and fascination. To find art-deco buildings, near late 19th century Greek style buildings and 30's houses, without the modern (ugly) blocks as refreshing. Perhaps some more insights into this quartier would also be appreciated.

Mr. Raafat Ours is a bewildering crisis. By any standard known to man we should’ve been at the forefront of the well-developed world, yet, in reality we still live in the squalor of the under developed phase of modern human history. Have we ever asked ourselves why? We certainly don’t lack the resources required to occupy a prominent position amongst the league of well-developed nations, we have the skill of history and geography, we have the skill of 7000 years of civilization, we have the skill of three divine religions, and finally we have the skill of human fatalism imposed upon us by our annals of cumulative human experience. So what is it that’s keeping us paraplegic in a cultural sense if nothing else? You asked the question: Is our government doing enough to preserve our national treasures? My answer to you is: What government? Do we have a government? Our government consists mainly of three types of incumbents: 1) Beheemah, Zekeebah, and Bagamah. Those are the three types of incumbents that we have in our governments. And you are asking me if they are doing enough to preserve our national treasures?

Dear Mr. Raafat: I lived in Zamalek since 1959 and went to the German School (Deutsche Oberschule - D.E.O) in Mohamed Mazhar Street. In my last trip, I saw another high building arising in part of the school location. I hope the remaining area will not be yet another high-rise. (My neighbors always used to joke that the Zamalek may "sink in the Nile" from the heaviness of all the new high-rises!)I live in the US now but frequently go back home. Despite the noise and traffic jams, Cairo remains so fascinating to me. Your article on the Zamalek Villas (Villa HUG: Cairo's Endangered Species) touched me because it indicates that "someone" still cares and has the sense to try to preserve whatever is still left after the senseless destruction of the beautiful villas and trees of the Zamalek and Cairo in general! However, on a positive note, in my trip last year I have noticed some improvement. Zamalek remains (to me at least) one of the most charming suburbs of Cairo. Please keep up the good work as a breath of fresh air for the preservation of endangered architecture in Cairo.

Glorious Alexandria - no longer there! The signs of destruction are all around. The wild extravagance in the pursuit of administrative triumphs also set in motion the train of destruction and laid Alexandria wide open to other kinds of urban barbarism. Architects and planners who were supposed to restore the elegant buildings, apartment houses, hotels particuliers, simply stripped them from shape, identity, and definition. They are now imposing almost every aspect of their uprooted background on us. Characteristic buildings and landscapes had been re-faced, and in the process made faceless, with stucco, and had to give way to some of the worst hybridization of modern cities anywhere in the world. Ugly elevated roadways, eminently wanting in symmetry, forced their way around the city with disturbingly paved side-walks inconsistent in patterns and color. I believe that Alexandria's self-image is now diminished by the perpetual humiliation caused by the architects and planners of its current so-called "facelift". Clearly, Alexandria cannot recover its former greatness in presence of such breed of architects and planners who committed, among other things, the following: -redesigned the Chatby cemetery fence in such an awful and disturbing pattern and colors. -Massacred landscapes around Horreya Avenue (specially in Glym & Cleopatra) with ugly structures lacking taste, style and character. - Destroyed the Saad Zaghloul Square garden which was designed by a famous Italian, if I am correct. My memories of Garden City are still very strong even though I left Egypt in 1950 when I was just under 9 years old. Finding your page has brought back a feeling of identity that I had lost. It fills me with pride too to see how many of my mother's relatives left their mark in this section of Cairo. While it is never entirely healthy to dream of past glories, the sense of nostalgia that  I have felt since finding out more about the Cairo district where I spent the first 9 years of my life is very strong. How I regret that my parents never felt it worthwhile to tell their children more about this splendid place where they lived. I have not been back to Egypt since 1955. It is now one of my priorities to visit again before it is too late. Cedric Carton
