Thank you for giving me the privilege to learn of the culture and the people for in the future Cairo or Alexandria will be my home.

Penn Hills, PA, USA - Added on 11/14/98 at 07:13:35Greetings to your wonderful country! I am researching for a book project on the British presence in Egypt, with particular reference to the enormous steps forward made by Egypt since the tearing up of the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty in 1951. The main area of interest is the Canal Cities, in particular Ismailia, where I lived during the 1940s & 1950s and where I married my Egyptian wife. I would dearly love to hear from someone who could provide some news of the present-day City of Ismailia, or who could relate some of the events in that part of Egypt following Britain's departure in 1956. Please help if you can, friends. If anyone can help by putting me in touch with any person or organization who might be willing to help, my gratitude would be immense. Kindest Regards from a fellow 'Egyptophile'! Geoffrey Richards

We just spent 3 weeks there, and I felt far safer there than in the United States. The people are incredible, Cairo is a wonderful madhouse, and the Red Sea with its coral reefs is beyond description. GO, SEE, LEARN. If you know how to listen, Egypt will talk to you. Claus L. Durham, US - Added on 09/22/98 at 17:42:26Working for an international co. for over 16 years, traveling across the globe, and now finally being stationed at a beautiful Asian country, my mind is always close to Egypt, especially the Egypt that Samir manages to articulate with passion. The heritage, the culture, the climate, the summer breeze of the Mediterranean, the awesome beauty of the red sea, the people, Luxor, Aswan, the sand dunes, the get-togethers, the family, the list is too long.
This site is a soother after a hard day's work, keeps you in touch and gives you something to look forward to the next trip to Cairo. For all the friends who have security concerns over visiting the country, I tell them that that having traveled quite a bit, Egypt is still one of the safer countries where you could walk around freely anywhere in any of the major cities and would not feel at all threatened. The probabilities of running into threatening situations like terrorist attacks or getting mugged is far less probable in Egypt than falling in trouble walking the streets of a lot of cities in the western world. However, as grown ups we all understand how the Middle East has DANGER written all over particularly for those who do not know much about this part of the world.
A final word of appreciation for Samir Raafat my friend and neighbor from the once beautiful Maadi. Thanks Sam for this invaluable site and please don't give up. Regards Hassan Khalifa

Jakarta, Indonesia - Added on 09/08/98 at 02:35:06Dear Samir: What I find most fascinating about the comments of your guests...Egyptian and non-Egyptian is...once you have been exposed to the Egyptian people and culture ... it is in your blood and part of your life FOREVER. I know of no other country where this strange phenomenon occurs! Our human roots go very deep in that land...the three great faiths bring us all to a closer understanding in beloved Egypt. Today, many years after living in Maadi, we have Coptic and Muslim friends (family) who visit us in the states and whom we visit in all parts of greater Cairo. We look upon one another as extended family and have for over 17 years !
My spouse and I have traveled most of the globe and this experience has never occurred again. What is this magic? Samir, I come to this site when I am homesick for my second home and you never disappoint with your timely articles and those that reflect upon the past as well. Each time I visit it is a learning experience for yesterday, today and tomorrow. Your love for this beloved country is so obvious in all that you write about her. The serene peace and beauty of the site and it's illustrations virtually take me to Egypt ! Your contribution to so many and it's profound effect upon them...as evidenced in the guest book comments is sincere and from the heart...my heart as well.
Samir, I don't think you realize what a wonderful site you have created and how small and petty our prejudices become when there is true understanding and communications between peoples. Thank you for enriching my life, knowledge of Egypt, and making the world a bit smaller and more peaceful.

I have been back and forth to Egypt many times, but now I have decided to give Egypt a chance to be my home country for a while. Any suggestions? Any warnings? Please feel free to email me.
